Png Png's stay in KKH

It was traumatic to both hubby and I during Png Png's stay in KKH. We travelled to kkh twice a day I was doing confinement so need to go home and take confinement food and have some rest. KKH sent Png Png for many tests - CT scan, x ray, endless blood tests, spinal fluid test...... Our heart sank whenver the tests results came back negative. It called for more testings. Worse part is there was Good Friday public holiday. Labs were closed, Dr can't tell what's wrong except performed many tests on him.

He had blood transfusion twice and platelet tranfusion thrice. He was on drip. No milk but drip.....Tubes all over him

It was heart shattering to see his reaction - not much crying, sleeping most of the time. He opened his eyes and looked at us on some days when we were about to go, seems to tell us to stay. We stayed till he fall asleep

It was a relief when the test result came back positive! Png Png had enterovirus (virus that enters thru the gut) sepsis (blood infection) with meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain) n thrombocytopenia (low platelets)

There is no medication for such infection. It depends on his own antibody to fight the virus. I was very happy when Dr decided to take off the drip and bottle fed him with my precious breast milk. However, he was too weak to drink from bottle. The nurses tube fed him. He threw out milk and was put on formula milk. He still threw out formula milk though he was given formula milk which meant to prevent vomitting. My hubby told Dr that I wish to latch on Png Png very much. Dr decided to give it a try. I was double joyed. Wonder if it's because of that, he started picking up. He was transferred to normal ward on 24th Mar and discharged on 25th Mar, my best birthday gift for this year

Black Saturday

Morning we brought Png Png to polyclinic to test his bilirubin level. Stupid polyclinic doesn't allow jumping queue for new born if not consulting Dr there

We brought the blood test results to PD Sim's clinic. We knew that Png Png will be admitted for the level of bilirubin indicated in the test results. Chen Chen can't understand why we wanna send Png Png to hospital. He snatched the blood test results to throw away so that Png Png won't go to hospital, demostrating his protection over Png Png

PD Sim wrote a letter to PD Ong in TMC to examine the purplish spots and do a blood test as there were more purplish spots The spots could mean internal bleeding.

Png Png was admitted to TMC for light therapy for jaundice.

In late evening, we received a call from PD Ong to transfer Png Png to KKH A&E as Png Png's platelet level was very low at 19 where normal range is 150 - 400

In emergency ward, Png Png was poked here and there, drew blood but he didn't cry much. Worse was he stopped breathing twice. I thought I will loss him

Png Png was sent for CT scanning when we did admission for him

Nurse from A&E told us to go ICU to look for Png Png but we couldn't find him there. Lucky a Dr Lee in ICU helped us to check various wards to find out that Png Png was in high dependency ward

Detection of the infection

Today we brought Png Png to PD Sim for consultation as Png Png did not pass motion since Wed. PD Sim spotted some purplish spots on Png Png and asked me if they were there when he was discharged. Png Png had red spots all over his face and body and I thought the purplish spots were there. PD Sim said ok then leave it as it is but he felt uneasy

When the infection surface

Today we brought Png Png to TMC for check up. He has jaundice. PD Ong advised us to sun Png Png and bring him to polyclinic to check bilirubin level on Fri or Sat.

From the experience of Chen Chen, we decided to give Png Png total formula milk for 3 days in case Png Png has breast milk jaundice

Poor Png Png looked very lethargic and uncomfortable. Just like Chen Chen when he was on total formula milk. Png Png was cold from head to toe and he moaned and frowned. Look very poor thing for a new born. We thought he was like Chen Chen

Confinement on our own

Png Png arrived 4 weeks before due date, as such my confinement lady can't do confinement for me. The replacement confinement lady will come in on 11th March. So today hubby will do confinement for me ie bathe Png Png, bring confinement food my mum cooked for me and change Png Png whenever he soiled his diaper. The most challenging task is bathing Png Png. The diffulty of bathing a new born aside, Png Png screamed very loudy when bathing. hahaha....

Home sweet home

Today Png Png and I were discharged from the hospital.

The nurse in TMC was very nice to carry Png Png to the waiting area then hand Png Png to me after I sat on the sofa at the waiting area waiting for hubby to drive his car to the waiting area

Daddy and mummy also gave me a present - a very interesting pop up book "Because I love you so much" for being a good kor kor from now and forever

The arrival of Prince Png Png

I was very busy teaching temp staff in the office. My temp staff came in just 3 days ago. Mummy called me twice asking what time I gonna consult Dr Sim. I thought of waiting till the next gynae visit as I thought I felt better today. On a 2nd thought, I called Dr Sim's clinic at 11:45 am. Dr Sim was in the theatre. Her clinic assistant Janelle told me better go to the clinic. She fixed an appointment for me at 2:45pm

I was put on CTG to monitor contraction upon arrival at Dr Sim's clinic. To my surprise, Dr Sim said baby wanna come out already (@ exactly 36 weeks!!!). Dr Sim arranged me to be admitted. I thought Dr Sim was joking. I have not packed my hospital bag yet

At the clinic recep area, Dr Sim saw me and asked why I was not in the delivery room.

I went to delivery room and hubby did the admission procedure while papa and mummy stayed at the waiting area

I was told to bathe and the nurses did the necessary procedures for me

15+ I was in the delivery room Hubby went back to office to pack his things

17:40 Dr Sim broke my water bag and said that she will go home and change and come back in 30 min Hubby went to take his dinner

18:00 I was 7cm dilated Dr Sim and hubby were not back yet. Mid wife & I were panic. She contacted Dr Sim while I look for my cell phone to contact hubby but can't find my cell phone as hubby took it

18:30 Hubby came back. My back ached very badly and feel like passing motion. Mid wife told me to hold don't push. I took laughing gas and dosed off when contracting was gone

18:35 Dr Sim arrived. Mid wife said "your gynae is here push"

18:39 The cry of the prince to announce his arrival Hubby cut umbilical cord and Dr Sim stitched up my tear. I had slight tear. She didn't perform episiotomy on me

Png Png was very energetic. Swing his arms the moment his arms were out from my birth canal. Cried very loudly and non stop from the moment he arrived to the moment we were out of the delivery room

It was a swift, smooth and easy delivery. The contraction was not as intense as my previous delivery

Png Png was almost a premie He weighed 2.63kg, length 46cm head circumference 34cm

Prelude - from Chen Chen

I had been cranky, throwing tantrum and cried easily since mummy was pregnant. This made everyone especially mummy very irritated and screaming at me. Mummy, I want so much of your attention but I don't mean to make you angry. Chinese (we are Chinese) believe that before the arrival of the baby, the immediate elder one will be very cranky and attention seeking. I was just following the norm. Please don't be angry with me. I love you and don't wish to make you angry

5th Mar (Wednesday) mummy was angry and steaming when doing hand writing with me. Her tummy harden like there were rocks again

6th Mar (Thursday) mummy's tummy harden for the entire day and night since last night. Daddy asked mummy to call her gynae Dr Sim but don't know what no to call. Dr Sim told mummy before if she felt her tummy hard like rock for many episodes, call her. It might be contraction. Mummy said will call Dr Sim tomorrow morning
