Home teaching - Napping house

Jun Rong's mummy Crystel from lapbook class shared this website with me http://www.homeschoolshare.com/level_1_lapbooks.php to get information on lapbooking for free.

I did the very first lapbook with Png Png on The Napping House. Most materials extracted from http://www.homeschoolshare.com/napping_house.php
When I first read this book. I felt that it's a silly book with no story line. As I read the book more, I fell in love with it. Png Png likes this book a lot too.

I got Png Png to tell me what are the things found in the house. I gave him magazines and flyers to look for the picture of the things he named. We used this as the cover page

The things found in my house

Sleeping songs

I spy with my little eyes something beginning with .. alphabet of the things (in yellow sticker); I spy with my little eyes things found in the picture (in white sticker)

Synonym of words

Concept of symmetry through coloring rainbow with paint;

coloring rainbow with crayon. This activity is a follow up from what we learned in Shirley's lapbook class

This is another follow up activity from Shirley's lapbook class. Concept of primary and secondary colors through mixing paints

Can mouse climb the tree? No. It has short front legs that can't wrap around the tree trunk. Does mouse have long nose? No. Will it's nose grow longer when it pulls it? No. Can mouse's neck grow longer by stretching? No. What does rhino use to pluck the apple? Png Png answered horn. Can it jump? No Why? It has short legs and too heavy to jump. No It has short button nose. Can it jump? What is it good at? Juggling. Png Png said sea lion tosses the mouse up to pluck the apple. Why does mouse pluck 2 apples? To give 1 to sea lion and 1 for itself. Does all the animals have an apple each? Any apple left? How many animals are there? Shirley flipped back the pages to recall which are the animals. She suggested parents to take 8 apples and take 1 out for each animal while reading along. This teaches tots subtraction.
3. Shirley took a green apple and asked tot what is the color of the apple? Png Png answered green. Is it hard or soft? Is it smelly? She passed the apple around to let tots smell. Is it juicy? What is the taste of the apple? Png Png answered sour. How does mummy cut the apple? With a knife. Can mummy use hand to chop the apple into half or pull it open? She passed the apple to tots to chop the apple with hand. Some boys tried very hard to chop the apple with hand. Shirley said the skin of the apple is dry. She peeled the skin and said the inside which is the flesh is moist. She let tots touched the skin and the flesh of the apple. Shirley cut the apple with a knife. She told tots which part of the knife is handle, which part is the blade. Can you touch the blade? No. Why? Png Png answered you will cut yourself. She asked what is inside the apple? Seeds. What does mummy do with the seeds? Png Png answered throw it away. Shirley said we can plant the apple seed and it will grow into an apple tree. Lap booking class Term 2 lesson 5

Today Png Png rubbed his chest upon reaching the classroom. I asked him if he was fine but he vomitted and cried very loudly. Shirley heard that and came out to see what happened. She asked the admin staff to mop the floor while I washed Png Png. Luckily he didn't vomit onto himself.

Shirley asked if Png Png had fever, cough? She said we shouldn't attend the class if Png Png was sick as there were many kids in the class. I told him Png Png was fine. He vomited only then.
We did
1. Shirley referred to the insects list she gave out last week and asked tots which is the insect that has yellow wings. Bee. She wrote the word bee on the white board and asked tots to point to the word in the list. She asked which insect has long blue body with 4 light wings. Dragonfly. She wrote dragonfly on the white board and asked tot to point to the word dragonfly in the list. She asked which insect has 2 big front legs that look like praying. Praying Mantis. She wrote praying mantis on the white board and asked tot to point to the word praying mantis. She asked is praying mantis 1 word or 2 words. Png Png got all the answers correct.

Shirley said insect has 6 legs, a head, a thorax (equivalent to neck) and an abdoman. She asked tots how many legs do you have. 2 Are you an insect? No. Does butterfly stomp legs? No. Butterfly walks gently. Elephant stomps legs. How many legs does elephant have? 4. It has a long trunk. Is elephant an insect? No How many legs does caterpillar have? She counts the legs of picture of a caterpillar in the book. 16 legs. Is caterpillar an insect? Yes. Why? Because it's mummy butterfly is an insect. She said all these questions emphasize that insect has 6 legs, a head, a thorax and an abdoman. These questions are important. They teach tots to draw back to memory and relate what they know. So next time, when a child sees something, he/she will relate to what he/she knew
Shirley asked where does caterpillar live? On a tree where there are leaves. Who else live on the tree? Bugs, birds. Birds pick up caterpillar with it's beak and bring it back to it's nest to eat. Can the caterpillar kick the bird(action kick)? Can caterpillar throw leaves at the bird (action throw things)? Can the caterpillar escape? No. Some caterpillars have spikes, some have angry colors like red with black stripes to warn birds that they taste yucky, not nice to eat. She asked tots will you eat fishballs with spikes? No right. They look yucky. That's the way caterpillar protect itself from predators. Same for butterfly. They have eye spots that are not real eyes. When predator sees the eye spot, it thought there is a pair of big eyes looking at it and dare not to get closed to the butterfly.
2. Shirley gave a mini book, name of the 7 days of the week, the things that caterpillar eats in The Very Hungry Caterpillar book. She said get tots to narrate what happened to the hungry caterpillar in the book. Ask tots what color is the apple. She said normally tot will answer red or green. Ask tot can it be green, yellow, brown? What color is the cake. Tot normally will answer brown chocolate cake. Ask can it be pink? Tots to paste the 7 days in the week (can use the 7 days in a week song to guide tot but start with Monday instead of Sunday) then the things that the caterpillar eat on each day
3. Sang Good bye song.
I added additional things to the cover of lapbook with Png Png
